time:2024-03-30 author:

On March 29, Xiamen University's Chinese International Education College/Overseas Education College hosted a cultural experience workshop at Xinhua Bookstore, Xiang’an Campus. Led by lecturer Xiao Ningyao and Chunzaihua tradition's renowned inheritor Hong Xiaoyu, the event offered international students a deep dive into the world of Chunzaihua.

The art of Chunzaihua (also known as Chunzihua), a traditional Hakka method of crafting threaded flowers, stands as a cherished folk craft with roots stretching back to ancient times. This unique tradition, particularly celebrated in Minnan (Southern Fujian), has captivated international students on Xiang’an campus.

From the moment the two teachers walked in, students were surrounded by the beauty of spring flowers, getting a chance to craft hairpins and ornaments themselves. Tailoring her approach to the learning styles of international students, Xiao provided a comprehensive overview of the origin, heritage, applications, crafting techniques, and unique aspects of Chunzaihua with vivid descriptions. She used Hongcuo Village in Xiang’an district as an example to showcase the dynamic folk craft of floral making and illustrate its significance in the daily lives of the Minnan people.

Hong then demonstrated the delicate techniques of wrapping colorful threads around pieces of paper to make flowers. Although the process might seem simple at first glance, creating threaded flowers requires considerable dexterity and patience. Under the expert guidance of both teachers, attendees mastered the techniques of wrapping, winding, and pinching, transforming colorful silk threads into auspicious, three-dimensional blossoms. Imbued with the satisfaction of engaging with this unique form of traditional Chinese handicraft and the thrill of their own successful creations, they also developed a deep respect for the complexities involved in safeguarding intangible cultural heritage.

This event served as more than just an opportunity for international students to experience traditional Chinese culture; it also offered them a glimpse into China’s intangible cultural heritage. Participants expressed that crafting spring flowers by hand offered them not just a lesson in traditional skills but, more significantly, an immersive experience into the deep-rooted heritage of Chinese tradition and its universally resonant beauty.
